Arabica vs Robusta
In simple terms, beans are typically made up of a blend of Arabica and Robusta beans.
Arabica: These are pricier, high-quality beans. They have a smooth, sweet flavour with hints of sugar, fruit, and berries.
Robusta: Cheaper and easier to grow, these beans are strong and nutty with a hint of chocolate. They have double the caffeine of Arabica.
You'll often find blends that combine Arabica and Robusta. These blends aim to offer the best of both worlds - the smooth, pleasing taste of Arabica and the strong, robust punch of Robusta. -
Coffee Flavour Notes
Sometimes you'll read that a coffee has "notes" of something, like chocolate or wood. This doesn't mean someone tossed a chocolate bar or a bit of timber into the coffee during processing. It's a way to describe the subtle flavours you might taste in the coffee besides the standard "coffee" taste. For example, a coffee with 'notes of chocolate' will have a slight chocolaty taste in addition to the usual coffee flavour. Same for 'notes of wood' – expect a flavour reminiscent of something toasty or earthy.
Coffee is naturally abundant with a multitude of flavours and scents. These are best categorised as follows: 'Chocolate and Caramel' are flavours that emerge prominently during the roasting process. 'Nuts and Spices' embody the aromas of sweet spices like cinnamon and allspice, along with flavours akin to toasted almonds and macadamia nuts. 'Fruit' encompasses the often-found fruity notes in many coffees, which is unsurprising given that coffee beans are the seeds of a fruit. Coffees that have been processed naturally tend to exhibit these fruity notes. Lastly, 'Citrus and Floral' include the zest of citrus flavours and the fragrance of flowers. -
Intensity & Strength & Roast
Intensity: Refers to the richness and depth of flavour, influenced by the bean type, growth location, and roast. Strength: Indicates how darkly the coffee is roasted, affecting the robustness of the coffee's flavour. It does not relate to caffeine content.
Coffee roasting significantly influences the taste of your brew. Essentially, it's the roast that shapes the perceived intensity of your coffee. For instance, when brewing espresso (which can be used in a Latte, among other things), a medium or dark roast is advised. The medium roast strikes a harmonious balance between acidity and body, allowing you to appreciate the coffee's intrinsic flavours while enjoying the fuller body produced by the roasting process. On the other hand, dark roasts are famous for their robust, rich chocolate undertones. The flavours in a dark roast are predominantly imparted by the roasting process itself.
